Registration for 2022-2023 academic year is now open!
Looking to improve your reading and math skills, earn your high school equivalency diploma, or learn to speak English? We can help! The Literacy Council of SWLA, Inc. is now registering students for their Adult Education and English as a Second Language classes. The Literacy Council of SWLA, a WorkReadyU, United Way Agency, offers classes for adults wanting to take their HISET or improve their reading, writing, math, and spelling skills. The Literacy Council also offers ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. These classes are for people moving here from other countries who need to learn the English language. Classes are free and open to the public.
To begin the process, students will come in for intake testing, which is an assessment of their skills in certain subjects. Students will be placed in classes based on their scores from the assessment test. Intake testing takes anywhere from two to three hours. We offer testing on Tuesdays at 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
Classes are taught by experienced teachers in a small group class setting. Students can choose to attend classes online or in person. We have several different class days and time options available. Morning classes are available every Monday through Thursday from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Evening classes are available every Monday and Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. English as a Second Language Classes are also available every Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM and every Monday and Tuesday night from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
We also offer testing and classes in Jennings and DeRidder for those who do not live in the Lake Charles area.
Classes for the 2022-2023 academic year will begin on August 15th. Students can register at www.literacyswla.org and click the “Enroll Now” button or call our office at 337-494-7000.
