The Literacy Council has partnered with Sowela Technical Community College, the Business and Career Solutions Center and United Way of Southwest Louisiana to pilot a transitional education program for GED students. Beginning January, 2012, adults ages 18 and older may enroll with the Literacy Council as a GED student and take college credit courses at Sowela.
The goal of the transitional education program is to accelerate career and technical education opportunities for students engaged in or considering adult education. Adult participants will complete courses that are part of a career pathway, work towards a GED, and gain entry into the diploma or degree program of choice.
For the upcoming semester, a maximum of 30 students will enroll. The Literacy Council and Sowela are continuing to accept applications for January and will begin a waiting list for the Summer and Fall semesters once enrollment is full.
The Literacy Council continues to provide literacy, pre-GED, ESL, GED and computer literacy programs. Services are available in Lake Charles and Grand Lake.
For more information about the WorkReady U Pilot or enrolling in any of the Literacy Council's programs for adults, please call 494-7000 or email info@literacyswla.org.
The program is made possible by funding from the Louisiana Community & Technical System.
